Studio Diary - 01/13/2001 (Day #7)
Pete Trewavas:Hello again.
We are into day three of recording and it was going very well up until this morning when we found that, something we have done on the recording machine, called a Radar, which is a hard disc recorder, has caused it to crash and not recognize the disc drive so we have to wait around while Ed, the engineer see, if it can be fixed. Mike and Neal are at their respective Hotels, and Roine and myself are waiting around. This sort of thing has happened to me quite a lot over the years. I remember a complete power cut for two Days when we had just started work recording Holiday's In Eden. The problem is that these things can put the project back, and we don't have much time together in Transatlantic.
Anyway hopefully I will be able to work on the Bass track that we finally finished Drums on yesterday. I will listen back to what I did yesterday and fix any mistakes, if indeed there are any, one can live in hope. While we have been recording here we have had Mike in the kind of live area/lounge, and Roine Neal and myself have been in the control room we have all been wearing cans (headphones) so that the engineer can listen to what is being recorded and we all have our own mix of which ever instruments we want to hear. In my case lots of drums and not much else.
We are still getting on really well, and having a lot of fun although it can get to be a pretty intense work rate from time to time. But we all seem to like working quickly and not hang about to much.
We have been taking pictures and video and would have been taking DVD if such a thing was possible, so I'm sure you'll get a flavour of the place soon. But it is a great place to be and record out in the middle of nowhere.
I'm going to go back and see if we can get back to work, wish me luck
Pete
Mike Portnoy:
Hi gang,
Well as already mentioned here by Mr.Trewavas, we had some major delays today due to hard drive malfunctions....
The Radar system is truly incredible for the great editing and recording features it is capable of, but it's a little scary having your entire session stored on a hard drive that could crash at any moment!
In any case, the bugs were finally sorted and we finally got back to work in the evening...
Spent alot of time discussing and changing the arrangements for the intro of the next tune ("Dance with the Devil" at the moment), and then begin tracking the drums.
Made alot of progress, considering the very late start...
Get about 18 minutes into the song before quitting time....
My night ends on a real big downer: my cat E.T. had to be put to sleep late last night which is such a heavy thing to deal with. Me and Marlene are big time animal lovers and E.T. has been with Marlene longer than I have!! She is totally torn apart by this loss....
Thanks to all the support and well-wishers at the Forum on my site...it is appreciated...
